Principal Research Scientist

Position Summary

RE2 Robotics has become a leading developer of mobile manipulation by working closely with universities, research institutes, and the federal government to create manipulation systems that are light-weight, rugged, and powerful. Through our research, we have developed manipulators that are highly dexterous and easily controlled. In our vision, the next horizon to mobile manipulation is the addition of greater autonomy of the system so that our systems can run with less supervision and in environments with highly limited bandwidth. The Principal Research Scientist will be a leader within RE2 to help us turn this vision into a reality.

Primarily, the Principal Research Scientist will be responsible for leading the technical development of autonomy and vision processing algorithm development. In addition, the ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit to help shape the direction of the company in this important area, help develop business cases, write proposals, and lead teams/projects to further our autonomy applications. At a fundamental level, the following requirements are absolute for this position:

  1. Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or other related field with a minimum of 5 years of progressive research experience in artificial intelligence, automation, and/or vision processing
  2. Experience in the ability to convince investment in a new idea or concept based on said research
  3. Must be U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

Responsibilities

  • Lead the research and development of solutions in the areas of autonomous and vision-aided robotic systems
  • Lead teams developing proposals for government and private customers
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to develop systems from concept to production level
  • Collaborate with industry partners and top tier academia research institutes
  • Initiate and participate in technology conversations with distinguished scholars and industry leaders
  • Develop and execute autonomous and vision-aided robotic systems project plans including technical approach and project management to achieve high customer satisfaction

Other Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience putting together winning research proposals and/or compelling academic papers designed to generate interest in a new idea or concept
  • Experience in leading and managing a small team of researchers with constrained budget and schedule to achieve technical success.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage research projects, conduct real-world experiments and demonstrations, and identify fruitful research directions, and lead proposal development efforts
